Most owners think their dog is learning a word. “Sit” gets said, the dog sits, and it looks like the dog understood the English. It didn’t. What the dog learned is a pattern of consequences that happened to be wrapped around a sound — and if you get the pattern wrong, the sound is meaningless no matter how many times you repeat it.
Do dogs learn like people do? Not exactly. Dogs don’t reason their way to a conclusion the way an older child might. They learn almost entirely through association — pairing a signal with an outcome, or a behavior with a consequence — and repetition of that pairing is what builds the connection. This is not a lesser form of learning. It is simply a different one, and once you understand its two basic mechanisms, most of what looks like a stubborn dog turns out to be a timing problem instead.
In my practice I ask new puppy owners the same question in almost every first visit: what do you want your dog to feel when it hears its name? Most have never thought about it — they only think about what they want the dog to do. I had a client with a nine-month-old Australian Shepherd named Ranger who came in because he wouldn’t come when called, ever, not even in the living room. Two systems, not one method
Dogs use two overlapping learning systems, and conflating them is where most home-training confusion starts.

Operant conditioning is the voluntary kind — a dog trying a behavior and learning from what happens next. Sit is followed by a treat, and sitting becomes more likely. Jumping is followed by attention (even negative attention), and jumping becomes more likely too, because from the dog’s perspective it worked. Why timing beats vocabulary
A dog can only connect a consequence to a behavior within a narrow window, generally a second or two. Praise or a treat delivered five seconds after the sit, once the dog has already stood back up and wandered off, reinforces whatever the dog is doing in that later moment — not the sit. This is the single most common breakdown I see in owner-reported “he just doesn’t listen” cases: the mechanics of reinforcement were never actually landing on the target behavior.

Where I land on method, and the counterargument I take seriously
Here is where I stop being neutral: I recommend reward-based training as the default for essentially every dog and every owner I see, and I do not treat aversive tools — choke chains, prong collars, shock collars — as an acceptable first-line option. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior reviewed the available evidence and concluded that reward-based methods should be used for all training, including behavior problems, and that aversive methods are not shown to be more effective. A study published in PMC found dogs trained with aversive-based methods showed measurably higher stress indicators than dogs trained with reward-based methods alone.
The strongest counterargument I hear from experienced trainers is that reward-based methods can be slower to produce a reliable behavior under real distraction, especially for a dog with a strong prey drive or a serious safety issue like reactivity toward traffic. - Pick one marker and stay consistent. A clicker or a single word, used the same way every time, every session.
- Reward within one to two seconds of the correct behavior. Late reinforcement teaches the wrong moment.
- Reinforce the behavior you want repeated, and stop reinforcing the one you don’t. Attention counts as reinforcement, even negative attention.
- Practice in short, low-distraction sessions before adding real-world chaos. A five-minute living room session builds the association faster than a ten-minute walk full of competing stimuli.
